Wildlife and Environmental Society of Malawi (WESM) – Mzuzu Branch was established in 1981 with an aim of conserving, advocating for, and managing the country’s natural environment specifically within its catchment area (the whole northern region districts save for Nkhata-Bay and Likoma).

Just like the parent- organisation, (WESM), WESM Mzuzu branch is membership-based with a focus on wildlife, natural resource management, as well as environmental education, advocacy and conservation.

The branch is there to champion three key programmes; Natural Resource Management, Environmental education, and advocacy at regional level.Among others, the branch implements awareness campaigns and extension services involving the local community, researchers and youth groups.

The branch works in cooperation with WESM secretariat, donors, the government, NGOs, commercial and private agencies and also the media. Currently, WESM Mzuzu branch is being housed by Mzuzu University under Department of Biological Sciences.

WESM Mzuzu Branch is a brainchild of Mr Kwame Phiri, and Dr. Mkandawire (of Mumbwe Pvt Hospital-RIP+) whose efforts led to the creation of this vibrant organisation. The current  Chairperson of the branch is Mr Twalibu Tandwe. There have been influential people such as Catherine Chinula, Tobius Kanyenda, cyriano Ng’ona who have been very influential in the branch.
